A certified home energy audit is an evaluation of a home's energy efficiency  and  limited aspects of building durability and occupant health. This is acquired through an inspection, various measurements, calculations, and scientific tests of pressure and flow.

The energy audit includes a blower door test. The blower door test utilizes a large fan situated in a fabric door with an adjustable frame ,that is made to fit tightly into an existing door opening. The fan is turned to face outward so that it removes air from the home. This lowers the pressure inside the home (depressurization), thus making the pressure outside the home greater. This increases air infiltration which then can be detected with diagnostic tools and documented.

Other diagnostic tools used are an Infrared Thermal Imager, moisture meter, and combustion analyzer. An analysis of each combustible appliance will be documented in the report. They will be tested to see if they draft properly and at what efficiency they are performing. Infrared thermal imagers are used to detect minute differences in temperature. These temperature differences are represented by colors which create a thermal image. This is helpful in viewing air leakage, insulation deficiencies and moisture signatures. Suspected moisture can than be further evaluated with a moisture meter.

The certified home energy audit report will include an air leakage and energy loss evaluation, a full color infrared thermal imaging report, and a proposal of potential energy efficiency solutions. The energy efficiency solutions will be prioritized based on their savings to investment return . Any health or safety issues will be prioritized for remediation. You will be notified at the time of home inspection if there is a immediate danger discovered.
